Exterior paint in Waterbury

Waterbury's Hillside neighborhood is exactly what the name says. Its National Register nomination describes a 116-acre residential district rising on a steep slope just north of downtown. Most of its houses went up between 1840 and 1920, and the overwhelming majority are Queen Anne. The grander houses, built for the city's captains of industry, sit on the upper streets. Foremen and skilled craftsmen lived lower down, in smaller houses closer to the street.

For a painter, that slope is the first thing to price. Ladders on a grade need leveling, the downhill side of a house is taller than the uphill side, and some walls need staging to reach safely. Queen Anne trim, with its brackets, spindles and shingled gables, is slow work on any lot. And the rest of the city isn't much younger: roughly 77 percent of Waterbury's houses date from before 1980, so old paint is the usual starting point.

The larger houses on the upper streets are the slowest of all to paint: more wall, more trim, and on the downhill side, more height.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. One photo rarely shows the whole house, so a local painter who walks the property will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
What changes the price of an exterior paint job?
Square footage is the biggest factor, then how much prep the old paint needs — bare wood or peeling paint takes far more work than a clean recoat. Trim, multiple stories, and a color change add to it too.
Do I need to measure my house?
A rough guess at the wall square footage helps a lot, but if you don’t know it, just skip the question and we’ll estimate from your photo.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A shot of the front of the house, plus any sides showing wear like peeling or bare spots, gives us the best read.
