Fence or deck in Birmingham

On a steep Birmingham lot, the front yard may need a retaining wall before it can take a fence. The city's zoning ordinance has a rule for that. A retaining wall built in a front yard to level it or control stormwater has to be set back two feet for every four feet of wall. A fence on top of a front-yard retaining wall, terrace or patio can't be solid.

On homes zoned D, E-1 or R, a front-yard fence can be four feet tall, or five counting posts and caps, and it can't be opaque. Natural wood is allowed in any yard. Brick or stucco over masonry, and chain link, are limited to side and back yards. Electric fences aren't allowed anywhere, and salvaged materials like pallets are out.

Rain is the other thing to plan for. The airport averages more than 56 inches of precipitation a year, which keeps the ground around a wood post damp for long stretches. So set posts in concrete shaped to shed water, and use wood rated for ground contact.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
