Fence or deck in Flint

Flint's zoning code says plainly that you can put a fence or wall on a vacant lot, using the same rules that apply to walls and open fences. You also don't need a zoning permit to put up a fence. The city still expects the fence to meet the zoning standards, and suggests checking with zoning staff if you're unsure.

Those standards are specific. On a residential lot, fences and walls top out at 4 feet in the front yard and 6 feet in side and rear yards. Height is measured from the lowest grade within 3 feet of the fence, and building up a berm to gain height isn't allowed. Fences have to be ornamental metal, rot-resistant wood, vinyl-coated chain link or another durable, high-quality material.

Waterfront lots have their own twist. The ground between the house and the water counts as a front yard, and no solid fence, wall or screening is allowed there.

Decks and patios can't go in a front yard at all. On an interior lot, a deck with a platform more than 4 feet high belongs in the rear yard, subject to the rear and side setbacks.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
