Fence or deck in Shreveport

In Shreveport, one office permits nearly the whole parish. The City's Permits and Inspections Division, in Government Plaza on Travis Street, issues construction permits for all of Caddo Parish except Greenwood and Oil City. Since May 2021, the parish has required work outside the city limits to be permitted by the same rules as work inside them. So if you live out in the parish, your fence or deck goes through the same counter as one in town.

Those rules start from the 2021 International Residential Code. Its no-permit list covers a fence up to 7 feet, though the City's guide tells you to check with the Zoning Office on fences under 6 feet. A small, low deck can skip a permit too, as long as it isn't attached to the house. Attach it and you need one.

If you pull the permit yourself, residential work above a set value needs a Homeowner's Exemption from Licensure under Louisiana law. If you hire the job out, the guide points you to the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors to check the license.

Summers run long here. About 98 days a year reach 90°F at the Shreveport airport, and about 11 reach 100°F, on NOAA's 1991–2020 normals. The same record shows roughly 51 inches of rain and about 30 freezing nights. That's a lot of drying out and soaking for one fence. Wood sealed on all sides, cut ends included, moves less.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
