Fence or deck in St. Louis

Inside the City of St. Louis, almost every new fence needs a building permit. The Building Division's list says so plainly. The one break is swapping an old fence for a new one of the same height, material and spot in a side or back yard.

The city also tells you how deep the posts go. Its fence guidelines set concrete footings at least 30 inches below finished grade for a fence up to six feet tall, and 36 inches for one up to ten feet. Each post gets two inches of concrete around it and four under it. In a residential zone, a fence in front of the building line tops out at 42 inches. Behind that line, and along interior side or rear lot lines, it can go to eight feet.

If you live in one of the city's 14 historic districts, or own one of its 112 landmarks, every fence needs approval from the Cultural Resources Office. Plan on a set of photos with your plans there. The guidelines ask for photos within 300 feet of a park, too.

Decks sit on the must-permit list everywhere in the city, right beside porches and retaining walls. So if you picture a new deck off the back door, the permit and its plan drawings are part of the job from day one.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
