Window replacement in Knoxville

In Knoxville's Fourth and Gill neighborhood, the window rules are written down. The district's design guidelines, adopted by City Council in 1999, say vinyl and aluminum replacement windows shouldn't be used. If replacement is necessary, the new windows should match the originals in overall size and pane division, with the same muntin style and the same exterior depth, width and profile. False muntins or grids shouldn't be used.

The guidelines leave some room at the back of the house. They say it can be appropriate to add windows on the rear or another secondary side. In 2022, the Historic Zoning Commission approved a Fourth and Gill plan to swap non-historic vinyl windows for wood two-over-two double-hungs in phases, on the condition that specs for later phases go back to staff.

Outside the overlays, plenty of Knoxville houses have age on them too. About 42 percent of the area's homes date from before 1980, and about one in five from before 1960.

East Tennessee winters test those older windows. The airport averages about 67 nights a year at or below freezing. An original single-pane sash rattling in a loose frame lets that cold straight into the room. In Fourth and Gill, the fix still has to match the old window's look; outside the overlays, the choice of material is yours.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo shows us the window type and material, but a local pro who measures each opening will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is window replacement priced?
Mostly by the window — the number of windows times a per-window price for the material and size. Tell us how many you’re replacing and we’ll do the math.
What if I only photograph one window?
That’s fine for the per-window price, but we can’t count your whole house from one photo. Pop in how many windows you want done and the ballpark gets a lot tighter.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A clear shot of a typical window — inside or out — plus a note on how many you’re replacing.
