Exterior paint in Philadelphia
Philadelphia's Historical Commission draws a useful line for anyone painting an old house. On a property on the city's historic register, scraping and painting wood trim counts as standard maintenance and needs no review. Painting masonry is different. Cleaning, painting or repointing brick or stone goes to the Commission, and so does coating most other surfaces.
That line touches a lot of houses. Two of every five houses in Philadelphia proper predate 1940, and old trim on a house that age usually carries many coats of paint. Getting it down to a sound surface is slow, careful work, and on an older house that prep takes more of the crew's time than the painting does.
The weather is kind to painters here. Freezing nights are mostly a December-to-March affair: of the roughly 88 in a typical year, the bulk land in those four months. That leaves spring and fall wide open for exterior work.
If your front is brick, your paint job may really be a trim job: cornice, window frames, door and porch. That happens to be the work the Commission leaves alone.
