Fence or deck in Naples

Hurricane Ian pushed seawater as high as 6 to 9 feet above the ground in parts of Naples in September 2022, according to the National Hurricane Center's report on the storm. Where it reached, low fences and decks sat underwater. If you're building near Naples Bay or the Gulf, plan for salt water from the start: stainless or hot-dipped galvanized hardware, and boards and posts that can take a soaking.

For a home that permits through Collier County, a fence permit starts with a site plan. It shows where the fence goes, how tall it is and what it's made of. A concrete wall needs drawings of its footers and fill cells, signed and sealed when required.

Septic adds a rule. If your house is on septic, the county wants the site plan to show the distance from the new fence to the septic system, and it cites Florida's administrative code for a minimum of five feet.

Doing the work yourself is allowed, but the paperwork is strict. The owner-builder affidavit has to be signed in person and notarized by Collier County Growth Management staff. For the full height and placement rules, the county's fence page points to Section 5.03.02 of its Land Development Code.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
