Fence or deck in Portland

Deck boards are the part of a porch most prone to rot, in the words of Portland's own preservation staff. A draft update of the Historic Resources Design Manual, dated January 2026, says historic porches and railings should be kept and repaired, with badly deteriorated pieces replaced in the same material to match. Where rot has set in or is likely, as with decking boards, the draft says a more rot-resistant material may be appropriate. Its example is a porch on Pleasant Street where rotten sections of the railings and posts were replaced in matching wood and the deck boards were replaced with composite decking that looks much like wood.

The draft takes a practical view of fences too. It says new fencing is generally acceptable if it doesn't pass itself off as historic or block views of historic buildings. Front-yard fences should generally stay under four feet and mostly see-through. Taller, solid privacy fences may suit side and rear yards, and wood or metal is the usual material. The draft still has to go back to the Historic Preservation Board for adoption at a public hearing, so ask staff what's in force for your district.

Citywide, Maine law sets one more limit. A fence that unnecessarily tops 6 feet and is kept up maliciously to annoy the neighbors is a private nuisance. That rule sits in the state's criminal code, in the chapter on nuisances.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
