Fence or deck in Providence

In Providence, the front of the lot is where fence plans run into the strictest number. For any residential use, the zoning ordinance holds a fence within 5 feet of the front lot line to 36 inches. Everywhere else, fences can reach 6 feet. If you set a fence on top of a wall, the two together still can't pass 6 feet. Decorative posts get 6 extra inches.

Two smaller rules are easy to miss. The bottom rail has to sit no more than 6 inches above the finished grade for the whole length of the fence, so you can't let a panel float high over a dip in the yard. Walls follow the same 36-inch limit near the front lot line, and a concrete block or poured concrete wall has to be capped and finished on both faces.

Decks are handled through setbacks. A deck can reach 6 feet into an interior or corner side setback and 8 feet into a rear setback, but it must stay at least 4 feet from every lot line, and it isn't allowed in the front yard.

The building code changed recently, too. Rhode Island's codes based on the 2021 international codes, with the state's own amendments, took effect on December 1, 2025, according to the city's inspection department.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
