Fence or deck in Richmond

Richmond is a city of old houses. More than a quarter of the city's homes were built before 1940, and seven in ten before 1980. If yours sits in one of the city's Old and Historic Districts, your fence answers to the Commission of Architectural Review.

The good news is that a plain fence can be approved by staff, without a full hearing. A rear board privacy fence qualifies if it stays at or under 6 and a half feet, has solid vertical boards no more than 2 inches apart, and has a straight, curved, pointed or dog-eared top. On a main road, it must also be painted or stained. Posts and gates get another foot and a half. A wood picket or simple metal fence out front can be staff-approved up to 4 feet, if a historic house of the same age next door has a similar one.

Some choices always go to the full Commission. A privacy fence in the front yard is one. Vinyl, plastic, wire, metal lattice and chain-link are others. If you want a quick approval in a historic district, wood boards, wood pickets and simple metal are the way to get it.

Outside of design review, Virginia's statewide building code doesn't require a building permit for a fence of any height. The exceptions are a fence that serves as a pool barrier, or one needed to protect people walking past a construction site. Decks aren't on that exempt list.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
