Fence or deck in Sacramento

On paper, Sacramento makes a short fence easy. The city's list of work that needs no building permit includes fences not over seven feet high.

Read the footnotes, though. Every proposed fence is still subject to Planning Division approval and to the height and placement standards in City Code Chapter 17.620, the wall, fence and gate rules. A retaining wall gets the same pass only up to four feet, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, and only when it isn't holding back extra load.

The bigger catch is where you live. Those permit exemptions don't apply inside a design review or preservation district, or on a historic landmark. Sacramento has 30 historic districts listed on the Sacramento Register of Historic and Cultural Resources, with names like Boulevard Park, Winn Park, Alkali Flat and South Side. In those districts, the same seven-foot fence that skips the permit counter elsewhere in the city needs a building permit.

So before you buy a single picket, check whether your parcel sits in one of those districts. The Planning Division takes fence questions by email, at the address listed on the city's permit page.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
