Fence or deck in Spokane

In Spokane, swapping out an old fence isn't a no-paperwork job. The Spokane Municipal Code says Development Services requires a building permit for all fences, including the replacement of an existing fence. Repairing a fence doesn't need one.

The fence section sets the heights. Up to 42 inches is allowed in a required front setback, and up to six feet in side and rear setbacks. Where your rear lot line meets the front lot line of the lot behind you, the fence has to stay at 42 inches or keep a seven-foot triangle open at that corner. No fence can sit closer than 12 feet to the curb of an arterial street. On a local street, it can't go past the back of the sidewalk, or seven feet behind the curb if there's no sidewalk.

Spokane's code also explains how the weather treats a deck here. Its design criteria list a ground snow load of 39 pounds per square foot, a 24-inch frost line and severe weathering. Decay is rated none to slight, and termites slight to moderate. In this dry, cold climate, the code's ratings point at frozen ground and snow, not rot.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
