Fence or deck in Trenton

In parts of Trenton, the front yard can't have a fence at all. The city's zoning ordinance bars fences and masonry walls along the front lot line, and along the side line in front of the house, in its Residential A and B-1 districts. In Residential B and B-2, a front fence can go up to 4 feet. Behind the front of the house, 6 feet is the cap. A corner lot has two front yards.

New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code doesn't require a permit for a fence 6 feet or under. The one big exception is a barrier around a swimming pool. Trenton's zoning adds that a home pool goes in the rear yard only, inside a fence at least 4 feet and no more than 6 feet tall.

The housing is old and tightly built. About 43 percent of the city's homes are attached, the Census Bureau's survey shows. The Landmarks Commission, one of the oldest in New Jersey, reviews exterior changes to designated historic properties, and the city has eight historic districts.

For a tired deck, state rules give you some room. Repairing or replacing part of a deck counts as ordinary maintenance, with no permit, as long as the deck doesn't hold up a roof or part of the building and the new materials match the old ones in the same spot.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
