Junk removal in Springfield
When Springfield surveyed residents about trash service, curbside bulky item pickup was one of the services they asked for most. The city doesn't run one. Springfield works on an open market: you pick your trash company from the private haulers the city licenses, and several companies may serve the same street on different days. Whether a couch can leave with your weekly trash depends on the hauler you chose.
The city is reviewing that system. In July 2026 it posted proposed updates to Chapter 94, its trash and recycling code, and the proposal is expected at City Council in fall 2026. It sets standards for trash and recycling service, but it wouldn't require haulers to offer bulky collection. The city says that step would bring extra operational and financial questions.
Some things already have a city route. A mattress can go to the Lone Pine Avenue or Franklin Avenue recycling center, or to the landfill, for a per-piece fee. Larger limbs go to the Yardwaste Recycling Center. Oil-based paint, pesticides and car products go to the Household Chemical Collection Center on West Nichols Street, by appointment, for residents of Greene, Christian, Polk, Dallas and Webster counties.
For a full load, the city-owned Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill near Willard takes household trash and construction debris. Cover or tie down the load on the way in. Few Missouri cities run their own landfill. The city says this one's daily intake has doubled over the past decade, and its remaining space is shrinking.
