Pressure washing in Des Moines

Around Des Moines, a summer limit on water use doesn't have to mean a drought. Here the trigger can be nitrate in the rivers that feed the tap.

That's what happened in June 2025. Nitrate in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers was near record highs, and Central Iowa Water Works couldn't use the Raccoon as a source at all. Its treatment plants and nitrate removal facility were running flat out. On June 11 it asked customers to cut lawn watering at least in half, skip washing cars and hold off filling pools. Within days it banned lawn watering for about 600,000 customers, the first such ban in the metro.

It came back in 2026. On June 8, the utility declared a Stage 3 Water Warning, mandatory and effective at once. Lawn watering and irrigation were banned, pools couldn't be filled, and garden watering was limited to a hand-held hose before 9 a.m. The tap water stayed safe to drink, the utility said. The point was to keep demand low enough for the plants to stay under the federal nitrate limit.

Neither notice names pressure washing. The 2026 warning listed lawns and irrigation, pools, gardens, and decorative water features that don't recirculate. The City of Johnston's posted copy of that June 8 notice is now marked expired.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo gives us a good read on the surface and how dirty it is, but a pro who sees the whole property will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is pressure washing priced?
Mostly by the square footage and the surface — a concrete driveway is cheaper per foot than siding or a wood deck, which need a gentler soft-wash. Heavy algae, mildew, or oil stains add to it because they take detergent and a second pass.
Will pressure washing damage my siding or deck?
It can if it’s done at full pressure on the wrong surface — that’s why good pros soft-wash siding and wood. Our ballpark factors in the gentler method for delicate surfaces.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
One shot showing the full surface you want cleaned — the whole driveway or the side of the house — gives the best read on the size and how dirty it is.
