Pressure washing in New York

A tag sprayed across the front of your New York building isn't always yours to wash off. The Sanitation Department runs Graffiti-Free NYC: report the graffiti to 311 and ask for free removal. Crews clean the front exterior of homes and businesses where it's easy to reach, plus sidewalks and streets, year-round as weather and crews allow.

A report sets off a letter. DSNY mails the owner a Notice of Intent to Remove Graffiti, and if the paint is still there later, crews inspect and take it off. An owner who wants to keep the graffiti has 35 days from that notice to say so. If your block gets hit again and again, the Forever Graffiti Free form lets the city clean your front whenever a tag is reported, with no notice first.

On a landmark or in a historic district, the Landmarks Preservation Commission draws the lines for the rest of the wash. Cleaning sidewalks, storefronts and facade elements with low-pressure water needs no LPC permit. When a pressure washer is used to clean a facade or strip paint, LPC's permit guidebook caps the water at 500 psi on masonry. Start at the lowest setting with the nozzle held well back, it says, and turn it up only as needed.

On a cast-iron front the cap drops to 300 psi, and the guidebook says a pressure washer shouldn't be used on wood or other fragile surfaces.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo gives us a good read on the surface and how dirty it is, but a pro who sees the whole property will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is pressure washing priced?
Mostly by the square footage and the surface — a concrete driveway is cheaper per foot than siding or a wood deck, which need a gentler soft-wash. Heavy algae, mildew, or oil stains add to it because they take detergent and a second pass.
Will pressure washing damage my siding or deck?
It can if it’s done at full pressure on the wrong surface — that’s why good pros soft-wash siding and wood. Our ballpark factors in the gentler method for delicate surfaces.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
One shot showing the full surface you want cleaned — the whole driveway or the side of the house — gives the best read on the size and how dirty it is.
