Stucco repair in Oxnard
Downtown Oxnard still has the houses its early families built. The National Register nomination for the Henry T. Oxnard Historic District covers 1909 to 1941 and counts 36 Mediterranean and Spanish Revival homes among its contributing houses. Those, and the district's Tudor Revivals, are wood frame with stucco walls, set on raised foundations of river stone, brick or cement.
The nomination says most of the houses have changed little. The 1972 earthquake damaged many of the original brick chimneys, which were repaired or capped. A few owners went further and stuccoed over wood siding, which the nomination counts among the more drastic changes. So on these blocks, stucco can be original, or it can be a later coat on a house that started out in wood.
Exterior work in the district goes to Ventura County's Cultural Heritage Board for a Certificate of Appropriateness. In 2025 the board took up a 1924 Mediterranean bungalow on South G Street. The plan included a new thin finish coat over the old stucco. County staff recommended that the stucco be kept and repaired to the greatest extent feasible instead of replaced. If your house is in the district, expect that question first: can the old stucco be saved?
