Stucco repair in Savannah

Savannah has dressed brick in stucco for two centuries. The Owens-Thomas House on Oglethorpe Square, finished in 1819 to William Jay's design, is a two-story brick and stucco house surfaced entirely in salmon-colored stucco. Its rear garden sits behind a high wall of tabby and stucco brick.

Inside the city's historic districts, stucco work goes through review. The Historic District Board of Review's instructions say every exterior change visible from a public right-of-way, lanes included, needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. Stucco repair is on the short list that staff can approve without a board hearing, with a decision in up to ten business days.

What counts as stucco is the newer question. In 2022, the review boards found the zoning code didn't define "true stucco" well, and asked that true stucco be the only kind allowed in the four historic overlay districts: Downtown, Victorian, Cuyler-Brownville and Streetcar. In 2024 the Planning Commission recommended a follow-up change to make clear that one-part stucco is banned no matter what kind of wall it goes over.

So if your house is in one of those four districts, expect the city to want true stucco on it, not a one-coat system.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the type and size of the damage, but a local pro who walks the wall will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
What does stucco repair usually cost?
Small patch jobs often land in the low hundreds. Cracks across a whole wall, or water damage behind the stucco, can run into the thousands. Your photo and ZIP help us narrow it to a range that fits your area.
Do I need to know the square footage?
No. Take your best guess if you can, but if you’re not sure, just skip it — we’ll estimate the size from your photo and your answers.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A clear shot of the damaged area in daylight, plus one from a few steps back so we can see how big it is. More photos help.
