Stucco repair in Scranton
Scranton is built on top of its old coal mines. A federal Bureau of Mines report describes the city as underlain by abandoned anthracite mines in several coal seams stacked one above another. In 1973 the bureau finished a test here that stabilized a 30-acre residential area by pumping about 450,000 cubic yards of crushed mine refuse into two of those seams through five boreholes.
When old workings give way, the ground above can collapse into a sinkhole or sag into a broad trough, Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection says. Its photo gallery of insured damage shows cracked foundations, cracked brick and windows knocked out of level. A rigid stucco wall shows that kind of movement quickly.
It's worth knowing whether your own address sits over old workings. The state's Mine Subsidence Insurance program has an online risk map that tells you whether a site sits over an abandoned mine and whether coverage is recommended.
The program exists because homeowner's insurance usually doesn't cover mine subsidence. Knowing what's under your house tells you whether that gap applies to you.
