Manchester was built by a mill company, and the oldest company housing is brick. The National Register nomination for the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company housing covers sixty-seven surviving buildings, tenement blocks and overseers' houses put up for mill workers between 1838 and 1916. Most went up between 1838 and 1857, and all of them were built of brick. On buildings like that, a paint job is windows, doors, cornices and porches, not walls.
