Exterior paint in Providence
In Rhode Island, scraping lead paint off the outside of a house comes with a paperwork step. Under a state environmental rule, whoever removes lead paint from an exterior surface has to notify, in writing, the adults living in the house and anyone living within 50 feet, plus the owners of nearby buildings, at least seven days before the work starts. The way out is a test showing the paint isn't lead-based.
In Providence, that rule reaches a lot of houses. Nearly half of the city's homes date from before 1940, so plenty of walls here carry paint old enough to test.
The state health department adds its own layer. For work that disturbs 20 square feet or more of exterior paint on a pre-1978 home, it requires a licensed Lead Renovation Firm, with a certified renovator on site the whole time.
None of this changes what good prep looks like. It changes the calendar. Ask your painter to put the notice week into the start date. If you're hoping to finish before a family event or a sale, count back at least a week further than the forecast alone would tell you.
