Fence or deck in Chattanooga

If you want to build your own deck in Chattanooga, check when you last did it. Under a state rule the city applies, a property owner can pull a permit for work on a home for their own use, not to sell, lease or rent, as long as they haven't been issued a property owner's permit in the last 24 months. Otherwise the permit goes through a contractor with a Tennessee license.

The city's Land Development Office enforces the 2018 International Residential Code for homes. Chattanooga also has a new zoning code, which took effect on December 18, 2024. If a neighbor's setback advice predates that, it may not match the rules now.

Historic districts add a step for the yard, not just the house. The Historic Zoning Commission wants plans for any change proposed to any yard, and its drawings show walls and fences along with the building. Staff can sign off on work that meets the district's design guidelines without a commission hearing, as long as it isn't a new building, an addition, demolition or a parking lot. A new fence isn't on that list.

Two things to know about that certificate. It isn't a building permit, so you may still need one. And if work doesn't start within six months of the issue date, you'll need a new certificate.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
