Fence or deck in Cincinnati

In Cincinnati, even a short backyard fence needs a sign-off from the city. If you live in a house and the fence is six feet or shorter, you apply for a Zoning Certificate of Compliance. If the house sits in a historic district, you need a Certificate of Appropriateness instead, and that application has to show what the fence will look like, not just where it goes. Over six feet, it's a full building permit anywhere in the city.

A privacy fence can be six feet tall along an interior side yard or in the back. In a front yard, or the side yard of a corner lot, the cap is four feet, and the fence has to be at least half see-through. The fence and its footings must stay on your land. The concrete can run right up to the line, but not past it.

Decks get a closer look under the Residential Code of Ohio. A deck skips the building permit only when it's 200 square feet or less, no more than 30 inches above the ground at any point, not attached to the house, and not the landing for a required exit door. A deck bolted to the back of your house fails that test.

One detail surprises people. A gate that swings out into the public right of way needs a building permit, because the city's DOTE office reviews it.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
