Fence or deck in Cleveland

In the City of Cleveland, a fence beside the house next door can be only as tall as it is far from that house's wall. That rule is part of Section 358.04(a) of the city's zoning code, and on a tight lot it matters. In August 2026, owners on West 19th Street went to the Board of Zoning Appeals for a 6-foot fence along a side yard. It would sit 27 inches from the house at the back of the neighbor's lot.

The same section sets the basic heights in residential districts. In a front yard, or a side yard that faces a street, a fence can be no more than 4 feet tall and has to be at least half open. Rear yards and the side yards between houses can go to 6 feet, solid or open. Another part of the section allows only ornamental fences in a front yard.

That rules out a lot of what people picture. A solid board fence only 3 feet tall in a front yard needs the board's OK, and one was on its October 2026 docket. So was a 7-foot cedar privacy fence on Fairhill Road, in August.

Before you order boards, hold your plan up against those lines. An ornamental fence up to 4 feet out front, at least half open, and a solid one up to 6 feet in back that keeps its distance from the house next door, need no trip to the board.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
