Fence or deck in Columbus

Columbus writes its fence rules around drivers. If your lot, or the lot next door, has a driveway onto the street, the zoning code controls how solid a front-yard fence can be. In a required yard with vehicle access, no part of a fence higher than two and a half feet can be more than 25 percent solid. So a solid privacy fence in that yard is out, while a fence under two and a half feet, or a mostly open one, meets that rule.

Out back, it's simpler. A fence six feet tall or less isn't treated as a structure. It needs no building permit. Go over six feet and it becomes a structure: it has to meet setbacks, including side yards, it needs a building permit, and the city wants plans sealed by an architect or engineer.

Building a deck is on the city's list of projects that need both a permit and a plan review. So is a new pool or hot tub. In German Village, the University Overlay and other special districts, you may need extra approvals first. Subdivision deed restrictions can be tighter than city code, and the city doesn't enforce them.

The city also won't find your property line for you, or settle a dispute when a fence lands on the wrong side of it.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
