Fence or deck in Phoenix

If you have a pool in Phoenix, part of your fence can't change without the city. The city's Planning & Development pool-barrier handout says once a barrier passes inspection, it has to stay for the life of the pool. Enlarging, repairing, removing or replacing it takes a new permit.

That barrier has a recipe. The fence must be five feet tall, measured from the outside. No opening can let a four-inch ball through. Gates have to close and latch on their own, swing outward away from the water, and carry the latch at least 54 inches above the ground.

The rest of the yard has its own limits. The city's fences-and-walls handout says you can't build a wall on a hillside lot steeper than a 10% slope without a permit. Nothing can go in the right-of-way, and the city warns that the right-of-way can reach past the sidewalk. At a street corner, nothing in the visibility triangle can stand over three feet.

So if a quote for a pool-side section includes a permit, an inspection or a gate rehung to swing the other way, that's the barrier rule at work. Ask how the new section meets it before the old one comes down.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
