Fence or deck in Las Vegas
If your yard in Las Vegas is wrapped in a block wall, the city's permit rules reach it early. The Building & Safety homeowner guide says you need a permit to build a block wall more than 30 inches high. Outside the front setback, a wood or ornamental iron fence doesn't need one until it's over seven feet. Raising an existing block wall takes a permit too. The only exception is a single added course, and only if the finished wall stays within the height limit in Title 19, the city's development code.
Pools and walls are tied together. The city's pool guideline lets the pool permit cover removing up to 15 feet of your block wall during construction, and the wall must be restored to code when the pool is done. A block wall that has nothing to do with the pool needs its own permit.
Decks follow a simple line: a permit once the deck is more than 30 inches above grade.
Check who you answer to before you start. The city's permit page says to make sure you're inside city jurisdiction, and the Valley's regional wall standards list separate building departments for Clark County, Henderson and North Las Vegas. Inside the city, a year-round amnesty program lets you disclose unpermitted work at home without penalties on the required review and permit fees.
