The Washington area sits well inland, but Prince William County's emergency management office still plans for hurricanes. It notes the county has no pre-designated coastal evacuation zones like other parts of Virginia. It can still see storm surge along the Potomac River, plus freshwater flooding on local waterways, and it asks people in low-lying areas along the Potomac and Occoquan Rivers to be ready to move to higher ground in a major hurricane. To cut damage, the office suggests retrofitting a home to secure and reinforce the roof, windows and doors, the garage doors included.

A storm doesn't have to break your garage door to stop it working. Fairfax County's Department of Emergency Management and Security says power outages can happen on their own, but more often they follow tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, winter storms or extreme heat. Prince William's outage page also warns against keeping a car running in a garage or any partly enclosed space near the house, because of carbon monoxide.

The same Prince William page gives the one step worth taking now, before the next outage. Find the manual release lever on your electric garage door opener, and learn how to work it.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. Your garage door shows up clearly in a photo — its size, material, and condition — but a pro who checks the springs and opener in person will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
What changes the price of a garage door?
First, whether you’re repairing or replacing — a spring or opener fix costs far less than a new door. For a replacement, the size (single vs double), the material (steel is cheapest, wood the priciest), and whether you add a new opener are the big factors.
Can you tell if my spring is broken from a photo?
Not reliably — a broken spring or a failing opener usually doesn’t show in a photo of a closed door. We’ll give you a repair range, but the exact part is best confirmed in person.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A straight-on shot of the whole garage door from the driveway, plus a close-up of any damage like a dented panel, gives us the best read.
