Junk removal in Detroit
Two stoves' worth is the limit for a Detroit curbside pile. The Department of Public Works caps each collection at 2 cubic yards, which it pegs at about the size of two stoves, and never more than 1,000 pounds. Got more than that? DPW's own advice is to spread it over several collection weeks. Appliances go out with the doors off and the refrigerant drained.
What can go in that pile is broader than you might guess. DPW accepts household renovation materials at the curb, like lumber, paneling, cabinets, drywall, tile and carpet, as long as they're packed right. Loose tile and drywall go in black contractor bags. Every bag, bundle or item has to weigh under 50 pounds and stay under 4 feet long, with the nails, screws and staples pulled. Concrete, brick, asphalt and shingles are still out.
Paint, batteries, oil and chemicals go to the city's Household Hazardous Waste facility on East Ferry Street. Tires and car parts aren't collected at all.
Where the pile sits matters here. Put it in front of your own house. The city prohibits setting items out in front of vacant lots and vacant homes, and doing it can get you a ticket.
