Junk removal in New Orleans
The 24-hour rule is the one to know before a New Orleans cleanout. The city picks up bulky waste once you request it through 311. But if you set it out more than 24 hours before your scheduled collection day, the city says you'll be fined. So the couch waits inside until the night before.
Bulky waste here means anything too big or heavy for the cart: sofas, mattresses, appliances, white goods like a washer or stove, and rolled carpet. Up to four tires can go too, but only with a large-item request through 311. Tree limbs get bundled in pieces under 4 feet, six bundles at most. The service is for homes. Small businesses have to hire a private hauler.
Remodel debris is a separate trip. The city names two landfills that take construction and demolition material: the Gentilly C&D Landfill on Almonaster Boulevard and RiverBirch in Avondale. Both charge for it.
For what's left after the big stuff, the city's Recycling Drop Off Center on Elysian Fields Avenue is open Saturday mornings. Paint thinner, pool shock and batteries are another matter. They wait for the city's once-a-year Household Hazardous Waste day, which is open to Orleans Parish residents only.
The French Quarter plays by its own rules. There, the city collects bulky waste only on Wednesdays, by appointment.
