Junk removal in Salinas
The Sun Street Transfer Station in Salinas has closed for good, so a trip to the dump starts somewhere else now. Salinas Valley Recycles, the joint powers agency serving the city and eastern Monterey County, takes bulky items at any of its sites. That means the Recycling Center at Madison Lane in Salinas, the Johnson Canyon Landfill near Gonzales, or the Jolon Road Transfer Station in King City. Some items carry a charge, so check the agency's fee schedule for the free ones.
Mattresses are the easy part. In September 2026, the Mattress Recycling Council named all three of those sites as free drop-off locations in its Bye Bye Mattress network. Madison Lane takes them weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
At the curb, Republic Services does the hauling. Single-family homes in Salinas get one free bulky pickup a year: 2 large items, or 10 32-gallon trash bags, or up to 2 cubic yards. Call Republic to book, and ask how and when to set things out. For a bigger cleanout or a remodel, Republic also rents debris boxes.
Head down the valley and the allowance grows a lot. Salinas Valley Recycles lists up to 10 free pickups a year in Gonzales, Greenfield and Soledad, with five items per collection.
