Stucco repair in Salinas
River ground and earthquakes met in Salinas in 1989. On October 17, the magnitude 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake shook the Monterey Bay region. The USGS documented liquefaction in floodplain deposits along the Pajaro and Salinas rivers, where wet, sandy ground lost its strength. Its investigators also found that soft soils roughly doubled the strength of the shaking, which caused damage as far as 60 miles from the epicenter.
The damage reached homes. Across the Monterey Bay and Bay Area regions, about 16,000 housing units were left uninhabitable, and another 30,000 to 35,000 were moderately damaged.
A lot of Salinas walls were standing that day. Half the homes in the metro were built in 1976 or earlier, Census estimates show, and nearly half went up between 1950 and 1979.
The USGS says the 1989 liquefaction looked much like what happened in 1906, a sign that many areas in the Monterey Bay region remain susceptible. California responded in 1990 with the Seismic Hazards Mapping Act, which had the state geological survey draw regulatory zones for ground prone to liquefaction and landslides. Before a big stucco job on an older Salinas house, look your address up on those maps.
