Pressure washing in the East South Central states
Storm cleanup can mean a gas-powered pressure washer, and its engine gives off carbon monoxide. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, CDC tallied 51 carbon monoxide poisonings reported by hyperbaric treatment centers in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi between August 29 and September 24. One of the nonfatal cases was tied to a gasoline-powered pressure washer. The report said teaching people where to put generators and pressure washers, and how to run them, would cut that exposure.
