Pressure washing in Memphis
Memphis is one of the few cities that gets all of its water from the ground. MLGW's 2025 water quality report says its wells draw from the Memphis Sand Aquifer, from 350 to 1,100 feet down, and the water is aerated and filtered before it goes out to homes. That's the water in your garden hose and in your crew's pressure washer.
The weather is damp, too. NOAA's long-run humidity table puts average morning humidity there at 84 to 85 percent from July through September. By afternoon it falls to 55 to 57 percent. If you're washing the house yourself in late summer, the afternoon is the drier half of the day to do it.
The water itself is gentle. The report puts the 2025 average hardness at 48 parts per million, or 2.8 grains per gallon, and the U.S. Geological Survey classes anything from 0 to 60 milligrams per liter as soft. Readings in the report ran from 14 all the way up to 150, though, and the same USGS scale calls 150 hard.
