Stucco repair in Portland
Portland's rain comes in one long winter push. West of the Cascades, about half of the year's precipitation falls from December through February, and summer gets very little. Stucco can ride out a dry August. What hurts it is months of soaking with no chance to dry, especially where water sneaks in at a window corner or under a roofline.
Building scientists answer that with a drainage space behind the stucco. Traditionally it came from two layers of asphalt felt, and a gap as thin as 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch is enough for rainwater to run down and out. If nobody knows what's behind your walls, a repair may mean opening a section to look. A photo can't show that part.
Winter can turn sharp, too. Cold air from east of the mountains sometimes flows west through the Columbia Gorge and brings the valleys their coldest readings, and Portland occasionally records gusts of 75 to 80 miles per hour. Both are hard on a patch done in a hurry.
On the Oregon side, a new residential code took effect October 1, 2026, and becomes mandatory April 1, 2027. Until then, a permit can use either the 2023 or the 2026 edition. Look up your contractor's license with the Construction Contractors Board before you sign. Then book the job for the dry months.
