Window replacement in Stockton
Around Stockton, both the county and the city of Lathrop treat window replacement as permit work, and the permit brings a few extras. In unincorporated San Joaquin County, the county says a permit is required to replace existing windows. Its over-the-counter window permit covers like-for-like replacement only. New or resized windows go through the residential addition and remodel application. In Lathrop, the city says every kind of retrofit except re-glazing glass into an existing frame needs a permit.
Lathrop's handout shows what rides along. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are required whenever permitted work is done: smoke alarms in every bedroom and the halls outside them, CO alarms outside sleeping areas and on every level. Upstairs, an operable window whose sill sits more than 72 inches above the ground outside and less than 24 inches above the floor inside needs a fall-prevention device, a window-opening control device, or an opening too small to pass a 4-inch ball.
Lathrop's handout also lists Zone 12's energy caps for the new glass, and notes exceptions may apply when less than 75 square feet is replaced. Stockton itself is Zone 12 as well, so the same caps follow you into the city.
