Fence or deck in Austin
Austin builds under a wildfire code. The City has adopted the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code with local amendments, and it sorts each project in the wildland-urban interface into a proximity zone by distance to wildland. Zone A is within 50 feet. Zone B runs out to 150 feet. Zone C reaches farther, near large tracts of wildland. The City's WUI map shows your zone.
Decks get stricter the closer you are. In Zone A, decks must be built of ignition-resistant or other approved materials. In Zone B, that applies to decks within 30 feet of a building, and in Zone C, within 10 feet. A fence within 10 feet of a building has to meet the same material standard, with a narrower band for houses in Zone C. Ignition-resistant construction gets two WUI inspections. The code covers the City's full- and limited-purpose areas, not the ETJ.
Underneath that sit the usual limits. Over 7 feet at any point means a fence permit, and a solid fence on a property line is capped at 6 feet from natural grade unless the grade changes by at least a foot along the line. A small freestanding deck is exempt if it's 200 square feet or less, no more than 30 inches above grade, not attached to the house, not your way out of it and not in a flood hazard area. And if a tree 19 inches or more across stands on your lot, the City says you may need a tree review.
