Window replacement in Austin

Austin publishes a list of the jobs that don't need a building permit, and it's specific. Replacing a door with one of the same size and operation is on it. Windows aren't, so a window swap isn't one of the exemptions the City spells out.

The energy code is the City's own, too, and newer than the state's. Austin has enforced the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code, with local amendments, since July 10, 2025. Texas's statewide rule for houses is still the energy chapter of the 2015 International Residential Code, in force since September 1, 2016. Travis County is in climate zone 2, labeled hot-humid in the federal climate-zone guide.

Older neighborhoods add another layer. Austin has eight local historic districts. On a contributing property in one of them, exterior changes need approval from the Historic Preservation Office or the Historic Landmark Commission, apart from routine maintenance and in-kind repairs, and the work has to follow that district's design standards. If you rehabilitate a contributing house, the City offers a property tax abatement on the value the work adds, as long as the work meets those standards.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo shows us the window type and material, but a local pro who measures each opening will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is window replacement priced?
Mostly by the window — the number of windows times a per-window price for the material and size. Tell us how many you’re replacing and we’ll do the math.
What if I only photograph one window?
That’s fine for the per-window price, but we can’t count your whole house from one photo. Pop in how many windows you want done and the ballpark gets a lot tighter.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A clear shot of a typical window — inside or out — plus a note on how many you’re replacing.
