Fence or deck in Springfield

How tall a front-yard fence can be in Springfield depends on your zoning district. In Residential A-1 and A, a fence between the front of the house and the street, or in the required front yard, can reach 4 feet, but an opaque one stops at 3 feet. The ordinance treats any fence more than 25 percent solid as opaque, so a tight picket fence may be held to the lower number. In Residential B, B-1 and C, the front-yard limit is 3 feet for any fence.

Behind the house, the number to watch is 6 feet. In any residential district, a fence taller than that needs a Tier 3 Special Permit. Gates at the property line have to swing inward so they don't block the sidewalk. On a corner lot, no fence can go inside the sight triangle.

Decks get a clear setback. In residential districts, a roofless, ground-story projection such as a deck may extend into the required rear yard, as long as it stays at least 15 feet from the rear lot line.

Upkeep is part of the rule, too. The ordinance says a fence, wall or planted barrier in disrepair has to be repaired or removed within 30 days of a notice from the Building Commissioner.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
