Junk removal in Springfield
Not every house in Springfield gets bulk pickup. It's only for properties that pay the city's annual trash fee and are opted in to city trash service. If yours is, each big item needs a bulk sticker. You can buy them at Big Y supermarkets in Springfield and four nearby towns, or at the City Clerk's Office on Court Street. A mattress or box spring takes two.
Then call 311. Bulk goes by advance phone request only. The list of what counts is long: couches, chairs, bed frames, cribs, filing cabinets, doors, windows, plumbing fixtures, bicycles, grills, lawn mowers, snow blowers, tires, washers, dryers, stoves, fridges, air conditioners and TVs. Rugs get cut into 4- to 5-foot lengths, rolled and tied.
Mattresses run on their own track. When the state's mattress recycling rule took effect on November 1, 2022, the Department of Public Works began collecting them on a dedicated truck, apart from other bulk items. The city said then that you have to mention the mattress when you book, and seal it in a plastic mattress bag, or it stays put.
Remodel leftovers don't belong in your cart either. Asphalt, brick, concrete and wood are all banned from it.
No trash is allowed outside the cart without a bulk sticker.
