Garage door in Oklahoma City

When a tornado's winds hit a house, the garage door tends to go first. That's what a University of Oklahoma engineer, Dr. Chris Ramseyer, told the Moore City Council in March 2014, ten months after the May 20, 2013 tornado. Most homes were designed for 90 mph gusts, he said, but the garage door is the first point of failure and isn't rated for 90 mph winds. The council minutes record that most of the failures begin there.

Moore, in the Oklahoma City metro, acted on it. On March 17, 2014, the council passed Ordinance 768(14) with no votes against. It set minimum rules for building homes to resist high wind, aiming for a house that holds up to winds of 135 mph. Starting April 17, 2014, builders of new homes in Moore had to put in wind-resistant garage doors, the Oklahoma Gazette reported.

The city was blunt about the limits. A home built to these rules won't survive a direct hit from a tornado with winds over 135 mph, and it isn't a storm shelter.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. Your garage door shows up clearly in a photo — its size, material, and condition — but a pro who checks the springs and opener in person will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
What changes the price of a garage door?
First, whether you’re repairing or replacing — a spring or opener fix costs far less than a new door. For a replacement, the size (single vs double), the material (steel is cheapest, wood the priciest), and whether you add a new opener are the big factors.
Can you tell if my spring is broken from a photo?
Not reliably — a broken spring or a failing opener usually doesn’t show in a photo of a closed door. We’ll give you a repair range, but the exact part is best confirmed in person.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A straight-on shot of the whole garage door from the driveway, plus a close-up of any damage like a dented panel, gives us the best read.
