Garage door in Houston

On the coastal side of the Houston metro, a garage door is a tested product, not only a style choice. The Texas Department of Insurance writes product evaluations for garage doors and rolling doors used in its windstorm program area. Its submittal rules, dated May 2026, measure them against the wind-load criteria of the 2024 International Residential Code. An evaluation alone doesn't clear a door for every house. Its design pressure rating has to meet or beat what your particular structure requires, and so does its rating for windborne debris, which TDI says is required inside the program area.

The install is part of the rating. TDI bases each report on how the door was tested, down to the framing and fasteners. Mount it some other way, and a Texas-licensed engineer has to submit an analysis. If the track brackets fasten to a wood jamb, that analysis has to show how the jamb ties into the wall framing.

The program area covers 14 coastal counties, Galveston, Brazoria and Chambers among them, plus the part of Harris County east of State Highway 146. There, a WPI-8 is the certificate TDI issues to show a repair or addition meets code, and insurers can look it up. TDI says not every repair needs an inspection, and to ask the local windstorm inspections office whether yours does. In its guide to TWIA claims, garage doors are on the short list of items that usually need an upgrade to meet local codes after a loss.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. Your garage door shows up clearly in a photo — its size, material, and condition — but a pro who checks the springs and opener in person will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
What changes the price of a garage door?
First, whether you’re repairing or replacing — a spring or opener fix costs far less than a new door. For a replacement, the size (single vs double), the material (steel is cheapest, wood the priciest), and whether you add a new opener are the big factors.
Can you tell if my spring is broken from a photo?
Not reliably — a broken spring or a failing opener usually doesn’t show in a photo of a closed door. We’ll give you a repair range, but the exact part is best confirmed in person.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A straight-on shot of the whole garage door from the driveway, plus a close-up of any damage like a dented panel, gives us the best read.
