Window replacement in Oklahoma City
On September 14, 2026, the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission made the 2024 International Residential Code the minimum for one- and two-family homes across the state. The energy chapter came along, with Oklahoma's own edits.
One of those edits lands right on windows. In the code's table of maximum U-factors, the state raised the climate zone 3 limit for windows from 0.30 to 0.35. U-factor measures how fast heat moves through a window, and a lower number is better. Oklahoma County is in zone 3, labeled mixed-humid in the federal climate-zone guide, so in Oklahoma City the state minimum now sits a notch looser than the model code. The minimum is a floor. A window with a lower U-factor is still yours to choose.
The same code covers how a new window gets flashed. It calls for corrosion-resistant flashing at window openings, installed by the window maker's instructions or another method the code lists, so water that gets behind the trim is sent back out to the wall surface instead of into the framing.
The houses are a mix of ages. A little more than one in six homes in the Oklahoma City metro was built before 1960, by Census estimates.
