Garage door in San Diego

If you park in a San Diego garage, the power outage worth planning for is the one SDG&E calls on purpose. The utility says it uses a Public Safety Power Shutoff only when strong winds and dry conditions create a significant fire risk.

State law has a reason to care about your opener in that moment. A 2018 Assembly housing committee analysis cited reports that at least five people died in the 2017 Northern California wildfires because they couldn't drive out of their garages while the power was out. The bill that followed, SB 969, took effect July 1, 2019. The state housing department's 2019 summary says any automatic opener sold or installed in a home from that date must have a battery backup built to run during an outage.

That rule reaches door jobs too. From the same date, a replacement garage door can't be connected to an existing opener that lacks a backup. So if your opener went in before mid-2019, a new door may bring a battery add-on or a new opener with it. The 2018 analysis warned that some older openers can't take a battery at all.

SDG&E aims to warn customers about 48 hours before a possible shutoff, then again about 24 hours out if the risk holds. One line on its prep list speaks right to this trade: learn how to open your garage door by hand if the power is off.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. Your garage door shows up clearly in a photo — its size, material, and condition — but a pro who checks the springs and opener in person will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
What changes the price of a garage door?
First, whether you’re repairing or replacing — a spring or opener fix costs far less than a new door. For a replacement, the size (single vs double), the material (steel is cheapest, wood the priciest), and whether you add a new opener are the big factors.
Can you tell if my spring is broken from a photo?
Not reliably — a broken spring or a failing opener usually doesn’t show in a photo of a closed door. We’ll give you a repair range, but the exact part is best confirmed in person.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A straight-on shot of the whole garage door from the driveway, plus a close-up of any damage like a dented panel, gives us the best read.
