Junk removal in Boston

An old mattress can't just go out with the trash in Boston. Recycling mattresses is now a state requirement, and the city won't collect a mattress or box spring with curbside trash. You book a pickup appointment instead. Memory foam, innerspring, hybrid and latex mattresses all qualify; futons and toppers can still go out as regular trash.

Massachusetts law also keeps anything with Freon or a picture tube out of the trash. A fridge goes only with the food out and the doors off. Fridges, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and old tube TVs or monitors all need a special collection appointment, with a limit of five items per appointment and 10 a year.

The city caps mattress pickup at 10 a year, and only for buildings with six units or fewer. In a bigger building, your property manager handles it. Past the cap, the city points you to a private mattress recycling hauler. Have it at the curb by 6 a.m. on the day, and if rain is coming, bag it so it can still be recycled.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo gives us a good read on how much there is, but a hauler who sees it in person will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is junk removal priced?
By how much of a truck your stuff fills — a few items cost far less than a full truckload. Heavy or special items like appliances and mattresses add a disposal fee.
Do you handle big or heavy items?
Most haulers do — appliances, furniture, mattresses, construction debris. Let us know in the quick questions so the ballpark includes the disposal fees.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
One shot that shows the whole pile, or the full room, gives the best read on how much there is.
