Junk removal in Poughkeepsie
For most of the year, the Town of Poughkeepsie's bulk drop-off isn't open. In 2026, the Highway Department opened its transfer station at 8 Burnett Boulevard on 12 days, Mondays and Tuesdays from April through September. You need current proof that you live in the town and a photo ID. A rented truck like a U-Haul is welcome; commercial haulers and businesses are not.
On those days the station takes a lot: furniture, carpet, bedding, lumber, wood fencing, vinyl siding, pool liners, tires and brush. Major appliances, grills and furnaces go with the metal. Drain the oil and pull the gas tank from a mower, tiller or snowblower first. TVs and computer monitors stay home, along with paint, chemicals, concrete, brick, roofing, sheetrock and household garbage. Every open truck or trailer has to be tarped, a state DEC requirement.
The City of Poughkeepsie is a separate government with its own transfer station on Howard Street. Dutchess County lists that one as temporarily closed due to fire damage, so call before you load the car.
Old electronics and household chemicals have a county route instead: the Division of Solid Waste Management's hazardous waste and electronics events. Registration for the October 2026 event in Poughkeepsie filled up.
Hiring the job out? Ask to see the license. Under a 2014 local law, every company that collects, hauls or disposes of solid waste in Dutchess County has to be licensed by the county's Solid Waste Management division.
