Pressure washing in Honolulu

Honolulu's storm water rules draw a line between washing a house and stripping it. The City and County's fact sheet on pressure washing buildings, roofs and painted surfaces says a pressure washer shouldn't be used to remove paint. It suggests laying geotextile fabric as a drop cloth to catch paint chips, and it notes that a low setting may help keep paint and roof coating material where they are.

The same sheet sets out when wash water from a building may go to the storm drain. Every condition has to hold. No soap, chemical or detergent was used. The water runs off colorless and odorless. The surface washed wasn't lead-based paint. And filters, such as geotextiles, are in place at the drain to keep dirt and paint particles out.

When the water fails any of those tests, it has to be collected. A landscaped area on the property can take it only if it soaks the water up completely. Sending it to the city sewer may take a permit, and the Department of Environmental Services' Regulatory Control Branch answers those questions. The sheet cites Section 43-11.23 of the Revised Ordinances of Honolulu.

The Storm Water Quality Division regularly inspects commercial and industrial sites, and it also inspects after a complaint.

The lead line is the one that matters on an older house. If the walls carry lead-based paint, the rinse can't go down the storm drain, filtered or not.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo gives us a good read on the surface and how dirty it is, but a pro who sees the whole property will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is pressure washing priced?
Mostly by the square footage and the surface — a concrete driveway is cheaper per foot than siding or a wood deck, which need a gentler soft-wash. Heavy algae, mildew, or oil stains add to it because they take detergent and a second pass.
Will pressure washing damage my siding or deck?
It can if it’s done at full pressure on the wrong surface — that’s why good pros soft-wash siding and wood. Our ballpark factors in the gentler method for delicate surfaces.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
One shot showing the full surface you want cleaned — the whole driveway or the side of the house — gives the best read on the size and how dirty it is.
