Stucco repair in Worcester

Worcester's signature house was built for workers, and it was built of wood. Over about 75 years, ending with the Depression, builders put up more than 6,000 three-deckers here, and roughly 4,000 still stand. Each one is a wood frame on a stone, brick or concrete foundation, with clapboards and shingles on the outside. The National Register study of the city's three-deckers found that most of the survivors have since been wrapped in aluminum or vinyl siding.

So a stucco house is the exception in Worcester, and the repair questions on one are mostly about water and cold.

Here's what's changed lately. Massachusetts moved to the 10th edition of its building code in October 2024, and since July 1, 2025 it has been the only code in effect. The residential part adopts the 2021 International Residential Code, and the state's amendments to the wall-covering chapter don't touch the stucco rules. That model code calls for a drainage space or drainage material at least 3/16 inch deep behind stucco in moist climate zones. Federal energy maps put Worcester County in zone 5A, a moist zone.

That gap is what lets water that gets past the finish run down and out. If your wall is being stripped and redone, ask your contractor how the new work provides it.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the type and size of the damage, but a local pro who walks the wall will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
What does stucco repair usually cost?
Small patch jobs often land in the low hundreds. Cracks across a whole wall, or water damage behind the stucco, can run into the thousands. Your photo and ZIP help us narrow it to a range that fits your area.
Do I need to know the square footage?
No. Take your best guess if you can, but if you’re not sure, just skip it — we’ll estimate the size from your photo and your answers.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A clear shot of the damaged area in daylight, plus one from a few steps back so we can see how big it is. More photos help.
