Window replacement in Dallas-Fort Worth
In Dallas-Fort Worth, the city you live in can decide which energy code your new windows answer to. The City of Dallas has enforced the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code, with its own amendments, since May 12, 2023. Fort Worth moved its building and residential codes to the 2021 editions but kept the 2015 energy code.
Dallas also spells out how much paperwork a window job brings. Its energy code sheet for home remodels says that replacing windows of the same size doesn't require an energy code trade on the permit unless the building official decides it's needed. Adding new windows is one of the items that can mean hiring a certified third-party energy code provider.
The national climate map has shifted, too. In its 2021 edition, Dallas and Tarrant counties moved from climate zone 3 to the warmer zone 2, while Collin and Denton counties stayed in zone 3, according to a county-by-county guide from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
Then there's hail. On April 11, 2016, a supercell crossed North Texas and hit the city of Wylie especially hard. The weather service says 80 percent of the homes there were affected. Hail like that can crack glass and dent frames, and a storm like that can turn a someday project into an urgent one.
